Capturing the Energy

Capturing the Energy

oil rigThe aim of the Capturing the Energy project is to promote wider recognition of the technical and cultural importance of the offshore oil, gas and renewable industry and encourage retention of significant records for research and education. The University of Aberdeen is the hub of the network supporting the project and Special Collections has established an Energy Archive to hold records collected as part of the project. There is a growing collection of industry-related material spanning fifty years and all areas are represented, including major companies, the supply chain and personal collections.

For more information on the archive see - the Oil and Gas Industry Factsheet.

Since 2006 Capturing the Energy has undertaken a number of initiatives:

  • an archive was created about the Murchison oil field, in partnership with CNR International
  • an archive was created about the Frigg gas field and pipeline system, in partnership with Total E&P UK and the Norwegian Petroleum Museum in Stavanger
  • inclusion in the government's Guidance Notes for Decommissioning of Offshore Oil and Gas Installations and Pipelines (November 2018) which explicitly supports the project and the need to preserve historically significant records
  • a report was commissioned from the Business Archives Council of Scotland that improved understanding of which records are of enduring historical importance.

Capturing the Energy is interested in collecting records from operatorssupply chain companies, overarching bodies and professional bodies and also individuals working in the industry or researching the sector:
